Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out the effectiveness of using the choral reading method in teaching reading descriptive text at seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 18 Palembang. A total of 69 students were selected as participants and divided into two groups: the experimental group, which received the choral reading method, and the control group, which received the conventional learning method. The research employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test measurements. The data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results obtained show that there was a sizeable increase in the average score in the experimental group. The mean score of the experimental group in the post-test was 74.70, while the mean score of the control group was 70. The Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) obtained based on computational SPSS software was 0.010 < α (0.05), meaning the research hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. It means that there was a significant difference in the effectiveness of teaching reading descriptive texts using the choral reading method in class.
